COVER CROPS: SMALL PLANTS, BIG SOIL BENEFITS

Cover crops are plants grown between main crops to protect and improve the soil rather than being harvested. They help keep soil healthy, reduce erosion, suppress weeds, improve biodiversity and boost nutrients naturally. Think of them as a living blanket for the land.

Angus Gowthorpe talks about cover crop

Here are some of the BEST types of cover crops and what they’re good for:

Cereals & Grasses
Examples: rye, oats, ryegrass
✔ Great for preventing erosion
✔ Excellent at holding nutrients in the soil
✔ Produce lots of organic matter
✔ Help suppress weeds with dense growth

Legumes
Examples: clover, vetch, field beans
✔ Naturally fix nitrogen from the air into the soil
✔ Improve fertility for future crops
✔ Support pollinators and beneficial insects
✔ Ideal for reducing fertiliser needs

Brassicas
Examples: mustard, fodder radish, tillage radish
✔ Deep roots break up compacted soil
✔ Improve drainage and water infiltration
✔ Fast-growing and reliable
✔ Great for soil structure improvement

Herbs & Flowering Species
Examples: phacelia, chicory
✔ Attract pollinators and beneficial insects
✔ Improve soil biology
✔ Help with weed suppression
✔ Add diversity to cover crop mixes

Many farmers now use MIXES of different species to combine benefits — for example rye + vetch for weed suppression and nitrogen fixing, or radish + clover for deep and shallow root systems working together.

Healthy soil = healthier crops, better water retention and more resilient farming
